All About Us
The story of an extraordinary friendship that began in Cape Town, South Africa, between an American visitor named Amir and his kind, hardworking taxi driver, Burton. Burton played an integral part in Amir's trip, helping to save his marriage proposal, which cemented a profound and lasting bond. Amir soon learned of Burton's immense sacrifices, including his family's harrowing journey years earlier to flee conflict in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Burton worked tirelessly, sometimes for 17 hours a day, ensuring his son, Hope Joy, would have a chance at a better life. Hope Joy was eventually accepted to the College of Saint Rose in the United States with a partial scholarship, but a significant balance of $23,000 per year remained. Unable to secure loans as non-citizens, Burton turned to Amir as his last hope to fund his son's education. Moved by the family’s story, Amir and his partner Erika committed themselves to helping Hope Joy pursue this crucial opportunity. They quickly began a private fundraising effort, raising $16,000 in just one week to meet the urgent tuition deadline. Recognizing the life-changing impact, they vowed to fund all four years of Hope Joy's college education. The story concludes with Hope Joy successfully starting his studies, illustrating the power of human connection, faith, and giving.
